Corresponding to these difference-based measures, “start sum,” “points sum,” “rank sum,” and “experience sum” enter our models linearly. Conversely, we fit the effects of “age sum” using four quintile-based dummies. Following prior research on age dependence in competitive domains ( Common Projects Navy Original Achilles Low Sneakers K5PYb
), we let age coefficients fluctuate nonlinearly, with the fifth (oldest) quintile as the reference category.

We use three other control variables: ( i ) “same team” a dummy indicating whether J and K race for the same constructor (e.g., Ferrari, Lotus, or Red Bull), which may lower (or raise) their likelihood of colliding; ( ii ) “propensity”—a time-varying measure of the tendency of the drivers in the dyad to collide, which we compute as the continuously updated sum of J ’s proportion of collisions in all of his or her prior races and K ’s proportions of collisions in all of his or her prior races; and ( iii ) various measures of race-level temporal heterogeneity.

Of this third set of measures, “race number” is season specific. “Stability” is a time-varying, race-level measure of the degree to which the competitive network has “congealed.” ( 31 ) We compute stability as follows: calculate C t as the covariance of D t /max( D t ) and D t −1 /max( D t −1 ); divide the eigenvalue of the first principal component of C t by the sum of that eigenvalue and the eigenvalue of the second component of C t ( 32 ). When stability is large, the amount of race-to-race change in drivers’ positions in the competitive network is minimal. “Poor weather” is a binary indicator for dangerous race-day weather conditions ( Schutz Auria Wedge hluq7Bm7
).

We also enter two kinds of fixed effects related to external conditions. First, we include racetrack fixed-effects track r ( t+ 1) to absorb differences in street width, maximum car speed, and sharpness of curves, which vary both across racetracks and when a given racetrack is redesigned. Capturing these differences is crucial, as the chances of a collision vary across tracks. Second, we enter year dummies year y ( t +1) to account for the effects of annually changing incentives, rules, and technologies. Separate from these conditioning variables, our interest is in determining whether θ is significantly different from zero in our full panel and in clarifying the cuts of the panel in which the effect of structural equivalence on the probability of collision is concentrated.

If our theoretical claims are correct, then, as an initial test, a positive bivariate association between structural equivalence and colliding will be apparent. The sociogram in Fig. 1 visualizes this association. Nodes are drivers. Edges link nodes if they competed jointly in at least one race. Using the Fruchterman–Reingold algorithm, nodes are typically close insofar as their average structural equivalence (over all races from 1970 through 2014) is high. Calendar time runs from west to east. Red edges connect nodes if the drivers represented by these nodes collided at least once. Nodes labeled by drivers’ names are encircled in black. Collisions are clearly concentrated among more structurally equivalent drivers.

WOW. This totally helped me. I recently started my own Blog Web TV Show and I’m super goofy. I was questioning myself a few times wondering if maybe I should be a bit more serious. But this made me re think that being your self is the best thing yet. Thanks for this great Interview! LOVED IT 🙂

Fascinating interview!!! Hypnotic I would say.

I gotta turn up my “tell it like it is” trait, which I’ve watered down ’cause I don’t wanna offend anyone.

I’m an extreme introvert, the kind of person ho almost always slips under the radar. Even my own mother remembers my siblings giving her gits that I gave her lol.

Not a great personality trait for a business owner.

But I’m also the person people turn to in confidence and for advice, so I think that maybe that is what makes me fascinating to others. I guess I would fall under the ‘Trust’ category. I’m not sure about the 2nd catergory that would define me, perhaps ‘Mystery’, but I’m not sure how to use the 2nd category to my advantage in my line of business.

Of course, this is only how I perceive myself as being perceived, so I guess I have to buy the book to learn what my fascination to others really is.

Fascinating video. 🙂

Thank you. xoxo ~ Marilyn D

I love the idea that you don’t need to hide who are you and what your personality is like in order to succeed. And actually it’s a good thing that some people won’t love you and want to work with you – mostly likely they would have been the wrong clients anyway. Got to do that personality test Marie mentioned now to find out who I am and what my key traits are!

While I always love all of Marie’s videos, this will rank up as my favorite!! It just makes so much sense. In my younger days, I would often speak my mind rather directly. Although, this trait not loved by everyone, I was able to accomplish a great deal as well as being highly rewarded because I was the one who would say what was needed to be said. Through some experiences, I have lost some of this and have been working on bringing my real personality back, with maybe just a little more filter than before. So true that the world is not ever changed by those who sort of care!! Thanks for a great interview! Can’t wait to read the book and take the test!!

Loved the video, and will be sharing with my followers, since it’s one that we ALL can benefit from!

People often comment about my passion, especially when on stage. So I think I’d like to amplify that aspect of my personality.

But I DO look forward to reading the book and taking the quiz that Sally mentioned, too.

When we fully embrace who WE are, not only do we live our dream, but we change the world! Thanks for a great video.

A couple of things immediately stand out. The median middle class household does not pay property taxes of $19K a year and live in a $1.5m house unless they live in San Fran or NYC. Anywhere else and the range is probably from $2 to $8K a year. $24,000 for child care and baby-sitting? For 1 child? That seems high as well. We paid $15,000 a year total for 2 kids and had an au pair. That was a long time ago now but still this seems excessive to me.

I live in a coastal area, suburb of Philly and have 2 kids. Saved for college for both. Committed to funding 4 years for each one if they are reasonable. My first will start Penn State in the fall. I estimate the 4 year cost with increases to be around $165K. Yes, for a state school. So, saving for education is rough for the middle class. I made great sacrifices to do that. In the end, where I live I fully believe $200K can get the job done reasonably for a family of 4. However, our cost is not has high as San Fran or NYC so $300K may be necessary there.

This really illustrates how society has become a small amount of haves versus a large amount of have nots. I am in the haves category so I guess I should not complain. However, what we are seeing politically is an expression of have nots being extremely angry. I don’t think it is exclusive to the right or left. The next big shock may be from the left. Society needs to figure this out.

What is the median cost of a home in the suburb of Philly where you are? It’s $1.5M in SF.

Cost of childcare has risen over the past 18 years.

Finally, thoughts on choosing Penn State instead of U Penn?

Thanks

A LOT less than 1.5m, granted. My oldest is a decent student but not quite U of Penn material. My youngest may be headed that way. Straight A’s. We will see.

However, my oldest is also a hard worker who knows how to make money. My younger one is good with the books but struggles with jobs. So, each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

Can you elaborate on what “a lot less than $1.5M” is so I can run the numbers? It’s the best way to quantify instead of go through just opinion. I got so many folks saying my expense chart is unreasonable, but they can buy a similar house 3/3 for $500,000!

I’m thinking that by the time my son goes to college in 2036 or so, college will be obsolete. If it’s not a top 10 ranked college, I’m not sure if college is even worth it. Thoughts? I plan to teach him everything about business and various types of jobs due to our online business.
